A car is required although it is possible to walk to the lagoon in about 15 minutes. A local taxi service is also available.

SIGHTSEEING

The villa lies within easy reach of a wide variety of historical and other sights. Caldas da Prata has an ancient spa and is renowned for its pottery. Slightly further afield are the impressive monasteries of Alcobaca, Batalha and Tomar. Most spectacular, however, is the medieval walled town of Obidos, a national monument dating back to the Moorish occupation of Portugal and now a UNESCO protected site. Largely unchanged over the centuries, its narrow whitewashed houses and cobbled streets have a charm remarkably unaffected by tourism.

Other local places of interest include the cliff top redoubt at Nazare, the fishing port at Peniche and the new resort of Praia D'el Rey. The local tourist office has developed a wine tour featuring vineyards and wine producers in the Estramadura region.

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with much of historical interest and a wide range of restaurants from Michelin starred to simple cafes serving some of the finest fish in the world. West of Lisbon are the smart resort towns of Estoril and Cascais and the fascinating old town of Sintra with magnificent old royal palaces. All are well worth visiting.

Other locally available sports include fishing, tennis and horse riding.
